With the holiday season upon us, some of you might be deep in the swing of all things magic and bright. For others, that holiday joy is a bit harder to find this year – and that’s okay too. 2020 has certainly been a year no one could have anticipated, and a season that’s usually a joy to embrace might seem a little overwhelming. A few characters in the fanfiction realm who knew about overwhelming holiday experiences are those of the Harry Potter Universe. After all, it’s nerve-racking to prepare for the Yule Ball.
That being said, the Yule Ball is also full of magic, lights, and beauty – so we’ve been diving into Yule Ball themed fanfiction this week. We hope you’ve all found ways to create a little magic of your own this year, and we hope these stories add to that for you.
So grab a mug of hot cocoa, put on some fuzzy socks, and relax with some Yule Ball fanfiction this week!
Before he knew what he was doing, he offered his hand. “Do you – er – do you want to dance? With me?”
She looked at him, then his hand, which took an agonising few seconds. Harry was about to accept rejection and disappear back into the mass of students on the dance floor. He was surprised when Hermione took his hand and smiled at him. His palms were incredibly sweaty – he hoped she didn’t notice.
To put it simply, Harry gets a crush.
The premise of this story is simple enough - Harry finds himself with a crush. The story itself is a little more tangled than that. Harry realizes he's got a crush on Hermione - but there's another someone who's caught his eye. What it means to come to terms with that is something new for Harry. Someone special helps him with that realization, and his heart grows bigger because of it.
Fred loved a good party. And Christmas. And suprises. George intends to see his brother's last Weasley product realized...
Fred loved Christmas, so it's no surprise that his twin brother keeps his memory alive by creating a little magic for those around them. That magic, this year, is especially wonderful - not just within the fanfiction, but for readers too. The story transports you to Hogwarts, you're there with them all as they prepare for the ball, during the dance, and in the time after. You'll see blossoming romance, an homage to Fred, and friendships that allow memories to continue being made, while being kept warm by moments in the past.
Dance the Night Away by lesyeuxdelilith
When Hermione and Bellatrix start to develop feelings for one another, things just can’t come easy for the two of them. There are reasons for them to stay apart, but if all you’re looking for are reasons to stay apart – you’re always going to find them. So, what happens when one of them can’t say no to an invite to the Yule Ball from someone else?
“It’s not a problem, ‘Mione,” Fred says honestly, because, well. Taking Hermione to the Yule Ball really isn’t going to be a problem. Really.
“Still, I owe you,” she says. She settles back into her seat. “How’d you know, though?”
“The panic,” Fred laughs. “You looked like you were about to fall out of your chair.”
Viktor asks Hermione to the Yule Ball but she’d really rather not go with him. So she makes up a little white lie and Fred swoops into rescue her once he realizes this. Later, she swoops in to save him when George makes the wrong assumption.
It’s just a few weeks of pretending to date between two friends, just to help each other out. Nothing will go wrong. They’re sure of it.
This fluffy feel-good fanfic contains everything from a fake relationship to mutual pining and, of course, the Yule Ball. When Fred and Hermione think they're doing each other a favor by 'fake-dating', they're faced with some very real feelings. Will either one of them be brave enough to be honest about what's in their heart? Or will their fake relationship be all that exists between them?

This one shot is a reader/Draco Malfoy story. You’re a Gryffindor, and you’re going to the ball with one Slytherin student you never saw coming. After some banter, you decide to show up dressed up in each others colors and you can’t quite say you’re anticipating what happens next.
Eyeliner by thelivingflop
In this story, Draco finds that he quite enjoys makeup. He also finds that he feels quite good wearing it. It’s different for him at first, but he grows more comfortable with the idea – especially when he finds out that he’s not the only one who fancies him in a bit of eyeliner.
