Let’s face it: fanfic is one of the most fearless genres out there. Practically anything goes!
From Severus Snape teaming up with the Marauders to Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort becoming lovers, fanfic writers can take the most implausible scenarios and make them work. And, for the most part, fanfic readers celebrate and embrace them for it.
Fanfiction.net has more 750,000 Harry Potter fanfics hosted on its platform while Archive of Our Own has more than 180,000. Some of the most popular sub-genres include Drarry fanfics (Draco/Harry romances) with 2200 on FFnet and over 23,000 on AO3 and Dramione fanfics (Draco/Hermione romances) with 2100 on FFnet over 22,000+ on AO3.
Clearly, quite a few fanfic readers and writers have bought into what would have been considered completely unbelievable story concepts before Harry Potter fans grabbed them and ran with them.
Yet some fanfiction ideas still remain so far outside the pale, that finding fanfics based on them is next to – or even completely (depending on which online fanfiction platform you use) – impossible!
So, let’s take a look at
Harry and the Dark Lord aside, you can’t come up with two more diametrically opposed characters in the Harry Potter universe. The two men were enemies at school and after.
In the canon universe, James Potter is the heroic Light wizard who died trying to protect his wife Lily and their son Harry from Lord Voldemort’s attack. Before that he lived a life of fun, laughter and love with his (mostly) faithful friends and his one true love, Lily Evans.
Severus Snape, on the other hand, is the infamous Dark wizard who grew up with basically one friend – whom he later drove away – and joined the Death Eaters once he left Hogwarts. True, he did see the error of his ways and change sides, but not before he inadvertently caused the death of his former friend and her husband.
So, the notion of them as a romantic pair strains even fanfic credibility to its limits. Nevertheless, a search of AO3 returns 164 such stories, while FFnet returns a total of just 22 stories.
In other words, James/Severus stories amount to less than 1% of the total number of Harry Potter stories on two of the biggest online fanfiction platforms out there! Clearly, the thought of this relationship is just too much for most Harry Potter fans.
But if you want to give it a whirl anyway, the most popular one on FFnet appears to be “Tale of Severus Prince” by Komodo Butterfly. This 24-chapter alternate universe story has been listed as a favorite by more than 300 FFnet users and creates a world in which Severus had a happy life in which he never attended Hogwarts.
Other than Hermione, no one stuck closer to Harry in times of trouble than the youngest male Weasley. Ron is such a stalwart friend to Harry that there is a fan theory making the rounds that says he should actually have been placed in Hufflepuff House, home of the most loyal wizards.
Of course, Ron was placed right next to Harry in Gryffindor House, home of the brave – but also the occasional dark wizard, i.e. Peter Pettigrew.
So, it’s not totally outside the realm of possibility that any Gryffindor, including Ron Weasley, could have turned evil. But the Harry Potter fandom doesn’t seem to buy it.
A search of AO3 for evil Ron or death eater Ron stories returned a total of – zero. Searching FFnet actually turns up one seemingly evil Ron story – including Ronald Marvolo Lestrange by Loony-1995 in which Ron is an adopted Weasley. Three guesses who is parents are…
Even here, though, Ron isn’t evil but conflicted and the story remains incomplete and not updated since 2011. However, it has received more than 100 reviews and been added as a favorite by 90+ FFnet users.
If evil Ron is a tough sell, getting fans to believe in a good or even just redeemed Bellatrix Lestrange is an even tougher assignment. Searching AO3 for “Bellatrix Black Lestrange” and “Redeemed” returns zero entries.
But a search for “Good!Bellatrix” actually turns up six completed fanfics. One of these is A Confrontation and Consequences by Daily. Bellatrix, proud murderer of muggles and mudblood lovers, makes an exception when she learns her cousin Sirius is being abused by his parents.
Searching FFnet, returns quite a few more entries, most of them incomplete. Among the completed stories are:
The Redemption of Bellatrix Lestrange by MJSLSBS – in which Bellatrix recants her loyalty to the Dark Lord and writes to Harry Potter to apologize for killing Sirius
The Forgotten Mother by ForgettablySilent – in which Bellatrix turns out to be Harry’s real mother.
There is also an entire FFnet community devoted to Harry/Bellatrix stories. However, it appears to be hit or miss as to whether Bellatrix is redeemed within the story or merely corrupts Harry.
In fact, you’re much more likely to find Bellatrix/Hermione femme-slash stories or Bellatrix/Voldemort romances than a fanfic featuring a reformed Bellatrix.
This is another fan theory that has been making the rounds in the last few years. The concept has turned up in other fandoms, notably in the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” which devoted an entire episode to this premise.
So, it’s not surprising to see that this particular concept has gained more traction among fanfic readers and writers than the other concepts have.
While searching on FFNet using specific related keywords is difficult, searching on AO3 yields:
Among the completed AO3 stories featuring Harry as a patient in or Hogwarts as a mental institution are:
