If you’re an avid reader of the Harry Potter books, you know that there are moments through the series that require a box of tissues and a nice cup of hot chocolate.
Those moments can certainly be followed by moments of lighthearted monologue and incredible moments of magic. However, sometimes, there’s just an unrelenting sadness.
It’s part of the appeal of the story These young adults are trying to understand life at Hogwarts as they also navigate adolescence. It’s a story we can relate to, you know, without the spells and magic wands and witchcraft.
Well…maybe some of us have magic wands.
The point is, there is a deep level of emotion that draws you into the characters and their lives.
This also stands true for Harry Potter Fanfiction.
In these stories written by fans across the world, we see our favorite characters in new situations, navigating new experiences, and experiencing new aspects of life.
They make you laugh, they make you believe in love, and they can make you do that horrible ugly cry face where you can’t do anything else for the rest of the day.
You know the one we’re talking about.
Those ugly cry stories, those are the ones we’re focusing on this week. So we decided to put together a list for you of 7 fics that stick with you, long after you’re done reading them.
Anyone who’s ever believed in romance and in magic has also, if just as a passing thought, wondered about a love potion.
We’ve seen it and read about it and in some cases, it seems to go right. It never really lasts, though. You can’t expect love to be controlled by something like a spell.
It’s never just that simple.
This fic explores what it means to take advantage of a spell and the extreme highs and lows that come along with that level of magic manipulation.
This is one of the heavier stories in the fic rec, and it does deal with topics that could be triggering. There’s a pretty detailed review of the plot, with some triggers involved, if you’d like to read that before you check it out.
The author of this story labels it a dimension travel alternate universe fic where Sirius Black is confused by the presence of two strangers at Hogwarts.
In terms of character losses, this one has them. In fact, most of the Order has perished and it’s left some of the characters we know and love on a journey of their own.
This journey has some dark humor, a healthy (or heavy…depends on who you’re asking) dose of angst and enough depth to the storyline and characters to keep you constantly wanting more.
Oh, and the epilogue will probably make you cry, both for the characters and maybe even for yourselves.
This fanfic is devastating in a way that makes you wish things could just be different. Gabrielle Delacour wishes only for a playmate forever.
What she gets, is something else entirely.
We’ve heard the tale of true loves kiss, but this is a cautionary story…one that reminds us that what we want in a moment isn’t always what’s best forever.
Especially when that forever isn’t yours alone.
So, we’re not saying that we’re huge masochists or anything, but when this fic was recommended to us, we knew exactly where it was going.
Without spoiling too much for you, the fic is based upon…well…as the title says, yesterday’s wishes.
These wishes aren’t spelled out for you. Instead, you can gather for yourself what Harry was feeling, thinking, and trying to work through.
It’s a sad event that brings him face to face with these wishes. It’s a loss that makes him look at his adolescence as a whole, but in hindsight, so much of himself was tied forever to what was now gone, that it wouldn’t ever be forgotten.
This story is one that really hits you before you can even begin to dig into it. Harry is dead. It’s a simple 3-worded phrase that can easily break the heart of a fanfiction reader.
Mix that sentence with the title of the fic, The World I Leave Behind, and you know you’re in for heartache.
You start off with a look at how those closest to Harry are dealing with his loss, but as you come to finish this one, you’ll have taken a ride on one hell of an emotional roller coaster.
We really don’t want to give this one away, so we’ll just say this: be prepared for a lot of tears – and some of them will be happy.
This isn’t devastating in a way that you might expect. In fact, it’s a lot lighter than the rest of the fics recommended in this list.
That’s not to say that it doesn’t pull on your heartstrings. It’s devastating in a way that makes you realize how heavy a weight one could be carrying on their shoulders without you ever knowing it at all.
The author note at the end of the story describes the thought behind making this fic, and it’s simple but definitely not used enough.
Without a plot, you’re not drawn into a direction that the writer laid out for you. You’re free to absorb the story and the emotions that come along with it as you see fit.
As for the shock value…maybe it’s the vulnerability we see in his character, looking into what he’s carried and what it all means.
This fic is a one-shot, not even reaching 1,000 words, but it definitely brought out some heavy emotions in us. As for the shock? It comes in the last two sentences.
Draco goes to visit Hermione, to reveal his undying love for her and to let her know that anytime he even thought he could live without her, he was wrong.
Presenting her with the most beautiful flowers he could find, he hopes something he says could make a difference. He wishes anything he did could make her stay.
Hermione remains frozen, sending chills down Draco’s spine.
It goes without saying that some of these fics will have some pretty heavy undertones, so please make sure you stay aware of author warnings and ratings.
The world, in both entertainment and reality, is never without a little darkness. Sometimes, reading a story that shows characters you admire going through struggles of their own, is all the help you need.
