4 Lighthearted Harry Potter Fanfictions That’ll Leave You Chuckling

Ever miss the snark and light-heartedness of the Harry Potter series? From silly puns to insightful commentary on how very ridiculous people can be, JK Rowling never missed a beat. We laughed, we snickered, we chuckled, and we cried when it was over.

Here’s a badly-kept secret:

Harry Potter didn’t die! The Harry Potter Fandom lives on in the form of fanfiction and new stories are posted every single day.

The best part?

Fanfiction writers from across the Fandom have kept the humor flowing. From witty dialogue to hilarious narration, fanfiction offers a constant source of side-splitting comedy, all based in Harry Potter!

You can explore all the nooks and crannies of the Harry Potter world that are the most ridiculous, the most biting, and the most fun.

So if you’re craving Harry Potter and how JK Rowling made you laugh, don’t worry! You can get your fix here!

We’ve gathered four

Light-Hearted Harry Potter Fanfiction that’ll Leave You Chuckling.

1. Birth of a Name by Nonjon

Birth of a Name By Nonjon Fan Art Cover

Summary: OneShot. 1943. A Slytherin prefect on the brink of a series of lifechanging events, needs to settle on a secret identity that will inspire fear in the hearts of the weak… You didn’t think ‘I am Lord Voldemort’ was his first choice, did you?

Harry Potter is an absolutely incredible work of art. Its creativity knows no bounds.

There are places, though, where it can start to fall apart if you dig too deep.

Ever thought about what it’d really look like to make an edgy anagram of your name? This fic takes on all of the other anagrams Lord Voldemort could have made in a hilarious parody that you’ll never forget.

2. No Mum He Really is my Boyfriend by Showmeyourtardis

No Mum, He Really Is My Boyfriend By Showmeyourtardis Fan Art Cover

Summary: If Remus has to go on one more date set up by his mother, he will maul his own face off. It was nothing against the boys, they were… Well, they were horribly dull, but it was mostly the werewolf thing. So when an escape plan, in the form of Sirius Black, presents itself, Remus is more than happy to take it.

Ever tried to go on a date with a werewolf?

Ever tried to find a date as a werewolf?

This adorable rom-com pairs up Remus Lupin and Sirius Black with hilarious results.

You’ll laugh, you’ll groan, and you’ll fall in love with the Marauders and their constant snarky banter as Remus, Sirius, James and Lily begin to realize that something has permanently changed in their friend group.

3. Feline Fun by Cleotheo

Summary: A run in with Harry and Ron leaves Draco in an unusual condition. While trying to find help, he discovers a secret the Head Girl has been hiding.

Cats are beloved on the internet. You can’t turn left or right without having another cat meme pop up to you and Harry Potter is no exception.

What you don’t expect is a cat rendition of Draco Malfoy that’s this adorably spiteful.

If you’re looking for a ball of fluff that’s nothing but snark and claws, this Malfoy is the Malfoy for you. You’ll never be able to picture him any other way!

4. Seventh Horcrux by Emerald Ashes

Featured Art: “ The Seventh Horcrux” by megadancingpanda | Learn How We Protect Fan Art!

Summary: The presence of a foreign soul may have unexpected side effects on a growing child. I am Lord Volde…Harry Potter. I’m Harry Potter. In which Harry is insane, Hermione is a Dark Lady-in-training, Ginny is a minion, and Ron is confused.

Have you ever read an evil hilarious narrator? Meet Lord Voldemort in the form of a young Harry Potter, with all his irreverent whining intact.

He’s angry, he’s petty, and he’s fabulous.

He’ll leave you chuckling at every catastrophe.

This fic is a power trip, a parody, and an insightful commentary on the Harry Potter series that still manages to weave a cohesive storyline of its own.

You’ll never forget the time you spent in Lord Voldemort’s head thinking “[this is] exactly the sort of behavior that caused me to turn myself into a nose-less snake”.

So there you have it! Four light-hearted fanfictions that’ll make you laugh until you cry!

Fanfiction allows us to see new sides of a story we’ve already read, and these fics dive in to some of the Harry Potter side characters that we otherwise never see and show us how truly ridiculous the Harry Potter series can be.

Humor in fanfiction comes in all forms – short and long, witty and snarky. With these stories, you’ll see it all!

4 Amazing [BBC] Sherlock Memes Hidden in the Depths of Tumblr

There are a lot of memes out there, especially for BBC’s much-beloved Sherlock!

For our last meme-history post of this year, we wanted to cover all of them.

No big deal, right?

Well.

This is not all of them.

But it is a big collection of bite-sized “mini-memes”. All the trends in Sherlock fanfiction and related media that people grabbed onto and ran with.

Sometimes in some weird directions.

What do you expect when a BBC Sherlock exploitable image lands on a photoshop subreddit? We’ll get to that.

But  let’s start with something that’s plagued fans of the BBC series and runs back more than a century.

Why is John Always Depicted With a Mustache?

This is a question from BBC fans in particular.

Which is actually a rather odd phenomenon itself.

Why?

Because the vast majority Sherlock Holmes adaptations feature Dr. Watson’s big, bristly mustache.

So where’d the mustache come from?

It’s canon. Arthur Conan Doyle described Watson thusly “Watson was a middle-sized, strongly built man, square jaw, thick neck, with a mustache” in his short story The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton.

And almost every film adaptation has adhered to that, going back to the film adaptation with Nigel Bruce as Watson. That mustache was so iconic, it became almost impossible to think of him without it, especially in contrast to the usually clean-shaven or stubbly appearance given to Holmes (which we’ll talk more about in a second).

More pertinent is to ask:

Where’d the mustache go?

Well, Martin Freeman ditched it.

Given that Jude Law had just played that same role with, possibly, the greatest rendition of that mustache in Holmesian history, Freeman’s choice raised some questions.

Those questions reappeared with force after Freeman entered with a fully grown mustache in Season 3 (only to be mocked by Holmes). The mustache is gone by the next episode.

Now, Freeman has said that he doesn’t like that mustache, and the fact of the matter is that that style of ‘stache just isn’t contemporary anymore, so it would’ve been a hard sell in BBC Sherlock’s modern setting.

But, there’s a bit more to Watson’s mustache than that.

The fact is that Arthur Conan Doyle might not have been the one to come up with the mustache.

Really? Really.

Remember how we said Doyle described Watson in “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”? Well, that was the 34th Sherlock Holmes story, published in 1904 and taking place after Holmes’ final conflict with Moriarty.

Doyle’s descriptions of Watson varied in all the stories he published before that but he never mentioned Watson’s mustache until “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton.”

So?

He still came up with it, right?

Here’s where things get interesting:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle assisted William Gillette in writing a Broadway production of Sherlock Holmes. This featured Bruce McRae as Dr. Watson, and he opted to give himself a mustache for the role. Thing is, this was in 1899, five years before the mustache made an appearance in the actual short stories. It’s absolutely possible McRae was the origin of Watson’s mustache!

As for why he might have done so and why the trait stuck, the answer is simple: character design.

As we said, Watson’s bristly mustache serves as a sharp contrast to Holmes’s clean-shaven or stubbly, unkempt appearance. Sherlock Holmes stories center around a “dynamic duo,” and it’s always wise to give them some characteristics that set them markedly apart from one another.

One more thing before we move onto the next meme: give BBC some mad props for adding in Watson’s mustache as late as Season 3, after they deal with Moriarty.

Why?

Because that lines up so perfectly with the mustache’s first appearance in the short stories.

Sherlock Falling on Things

Oooh, we promised we’d get to you, reddit’ers!

Here we are:

On January 16th, 2014, a Reddit user named Mikejohnno uploaded an image from BBC’s behind-the-scenes footage of the season three premiere to the r/photoshopbattles subreddit. This image depicted Sherlock falling backwards into an air cushion.

Simple, right?

That image turned out to be an exploitable image. For those who don’t know what that means, it means that the image isn’t overly distinct and is easy to edit.

So?

Here’s the deal:

With an exploitable image anyone with a will to do so can edit that image to depict…something else.

Exploitable images are the bread-and-butter of the r/photoshopbattles subreddit, where users are given an image to photoshop, with the goal of seeing who can come up with the craziest, funniest, or downright most impressive edit.

So now, to the Sherlock fandom’s delight, r/photoshopbattles had joined the fanart party.

And boy did they deliver.

Dozens of submissions popped up in the first few hours. All of them followed the same format. They cut the image of Sherlock falling to his supposed death away from the background and plopped Cumberbatch… somewhere else.

And the meme “Sherlock Falling on Things” was born, taking what was the most tragic moment of Season 2 and turning it into a farce.

You’ll find images of Sherlock falling into anything, from punk rock shows to  baseball games. Check out tsarmikhail’s wonderful series of these, including the original image.

This is one of those memes that got big enough to go mainstream the next day. On January 17th, 2014 Jezebel.com posted an article filled with some of their favorite examples of the meme.

The meme is sadly defunct now, but its absolute disregard for the solemnity of Sherlock’s fall lives on in our black hearts.

Why are So Many of Sherlock’s Kids Named “Sherrinford?”

Oooh, we’re always blown away by what fanfic writers dig up!

As you know, us fanfic writers love going into territories left unexplored by our favorite fandoms. It’s really one of the best parts about fanfiction; seeing what other creative minds might do to adress the questions left unanswered.

It’s no surprise that fanfiction writers delve into the futures of our favorite characters, all the way into parenthood.

But why do we constantly name Sherlock’s son “Sherrinford?” Archive Of Our Own has ‘fics featuring a young “Sherrinford Holmes” as far back as 2012.

But it goes back earlier than that.

Sherrinford was even mentioned in a 1954 radio show where Watson is trying to remember Holmes’ first name and blurts out “Sherrinford.”

Then, season 4 names the facility they keep Eurus in Sherrinford (Edit provided by Tumblr user “gianish” – Thank you!).

So you gotta know something is going on with that name.

But, where did the name come from?

Here’s the deal:

Sherrinford was actually the original name Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had given to the character of Sherlock. Eventually, of course, Doyle decided to go with Sherlock, but the name of “Sherrinford” still appears numerous times in Doyle’s early notes for the series.

Just his notes? But then how does everybody seem to know about it?

Well, that’s not the end of the story.

William S. Baring-Gould is a Sherlock Holmes scholar who, as a part of having the most awesome job in the world, wrote the fictional biography “Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street.” In it, he proposes something interesting: in one story, Holmes states that his family were country squires, which means that the eldest brother would have to stay and manage the house. Given his residence in Baker Street, Holmes obviously can’t be the eldest. What’s more, Mycroft wouldn’t have had the flexibility to play the role he does in the short stories if he had to stay and watch the house. When you add in the fact that Mycroft’s position as a civil servant was extremely common among youngest sons of country squires, it begins to seem like there must be a third Holmes brother.

Enter Sherrinford.

Baring-Gould proposed that Sherrinford Holmes must be the oldest Holmes brother.

As that biography became popular, the fan theory that was Sherrinford bloomed.

And given that any fan passionate enough to write their own ‘fics is probably well-read in other aspects of the character’s history, it’s no surprise that they would decide to name Sherlock’s son after his oldest brother.

That said, some writers do throw Sherrinford in as the oldest brother… and sometimes the youngest. The trend is flexible, and ‘fic writers use it to its fullest.

What’s Up with the Alias “Sigerson” Holmes?

Have you ever noticed how often writers go with “Sigerson” when Sherlock needs an alias?

Ever wonder why?

There are two parts to this story.

The first part goes all the way back to 1903, with the publication of “The Adventure of the Empty House.” Let’s put that in some historical context –  Arthur Conan Doyle had killed off Sherlock Holmes a few years prior and had faced a massive amount of public pressure (you can read about that in our earlier post on the I Believe in Sherlock Holmes meme!).

So now, in 1903, he was prepared to bring Sherlock back – and he did it in this story, “The Adventure of the Empty House”. Here he wrote that Holmes had spent some time wandering incognito as a Norwegian explorer named “Sigerson.”

Sigerson?

Huh. That’s a nice name.

Wait, didn’t we say there were two parts to this?

Let’s fast forward to 1975. In 1975, the inimitable Gene Wilder starred in an absolutely hilarious musical comedy entitled “The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother.” In it, he played Sherlock Holmes’ older, smarter brother, whose name just so happens to be…

“Sigerson Holmes.”

This film brought the name back into vogue and Sherlock fans knew exactly what it was calling back to. As such, the film served to seal “Sigerson” as a name to remember and usually, of course, as Sherlock Holmes’ default alias.

Conclusion

That’s all of them!

Well, no.

But it’s all the ones we have time for this year. We’ve had a ball digging deep into the memes and trends in the Sherlock fan community. Hopefully, you’ve gotten all of the answers to your questions and learned a bit about the history of Sherlock Holmes besides.

Happy Tumblr’ing!

Action Scene Breakdown – Building up your reader’s adrenaline really quickly

Today we’re going to go over how to open up an absolutely kick ass action sequence by looking at a paragraph of Sara_holmes’ fanfiction I’ll Keep You Safe Here With Me.

Opening a new scene – whether at the beginning of a fanfiction or halfway through a 300,000 word epic series – straight into an action scene is a tough challenge.

You have to build up your reader’s adrenaline really quickly, immerse your reader in the emotion (aka tone) of the moment, and help them relate to your character’s experience.

And the toughest part?

You’ve only got a few opening sentences to do it in if you want your action scene to start with a bang.

There are a few writing techniques you can use to avoid that affect and make sure you have a whopping good start to your high-octane moment.

Let’s add in another challenge, just for fun:

This is the first paragraph of Sara_holmes’ fanfiction. We don’t know whose head we’re in or what’s going on – but as you’ll see, she uses that disorientation to her advantage.

Let’s dive in:

“The lights are blinding. He can barely see a thing through the glare that has lit them up, open and exposed. The white circle pins them in place, the thudding of the helicopter above their heads reverberating through his chest. People are bellowing at them, telling him to get down, to lower his weapon. Sirens are wailing. The rain continues to fall, a mist visible in the bright lights that are pointing mercilessly at them.”

Let’s start by looking at the adjectives used in this paragraph to build an action scene.

Adjective choice can establish a tone, build a reader’s impression of a situation, or reveal a character’s mindset. Sara_holmes deftly wields her adjectives here to do all three of those things: establish drama, build an impression of overwhelm, and reveal her characters’ desperation.

Let’s list these adjectives:

Open. Exposed. Bright. Mercilessly.

You almost don’t need any verbs in this paragraph, the adjectives will get you there. Especially the adjective exposed. That’s the primary emotion and experience here, and it’s given to you right away – and at the end of the sentence, where it hits with the strongest impact. Exposed and open wouldn’t have the same powerful landing.

Now look at the verb choice. There’s a bunch here that are giving us the character’s experience of this paragraph.

Blinding. Pins. Reverberating. Bellowing. Wailing.

Those are all powerful verbs, they’re almost all on the extreme end of their meaning. Not bright – blinding. Not spotted by the white light, pinned. Not shouting, bellowing. As loud as you can get.

That adds to the drama of this moment.

Now check out the verb tense going on here: People are bellowing – not “people bellow”. Sirens are wailing, not siren’s wail.

Why?

Well, let’s look at this paragraph in the present simple.

“People bellow at them, tell him to get down, to lower his weapon. Sirens wail. The rain continues to fall, a mist visible in the bright lights that point mercilessly at them.”

These things appear to happen one at a time. We can digest one at a time and they don’t stack the same way because we’re not told they’re all happening continuously and simultaneously.

This paragraph manages to build an impression of an overwhelming situation by keeping its verbs in the present continuous. One thing is happening, at the same time as another, and another, and another, and they feel constant, like there’s no way to make them stop.

That’s something present continuous can do for you too.

There’s two more really interesting thing about this opening scene:

The first looks at this line:

“People are bellowing at them, telling him to get down, to lower his weapon.”

Now this line tell us a couple of things. He’s armed and he’s doomed.

But how do we know he’s absolutely outnumbered?

In this case, Sara_holmes had a distinct challenge – her main character is Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, aka the man who never misses. If you’re not familiar with the Avengers, just keep in mind that the protagonist here is a super hero.

It’s tough to make a scene where he’ll definitely lose. And harder to design one where we don’t even doubt his desperation, so the narration doesn’t have to get bogged down trying to prove it to us by listing massive numbers of advantages to the opponent.

Here’s what she does:

We’re not given the number of people aiming at him.

This is a common trick – if you want to tell your reader that your protagonist can’t win in a fight despite her guile or military training or super-powers, try this technique – never fully establish the strength of the opponent. What would happen if this were “fourteen” people.

Let’s look at it:

“Fourteen people are bellowing at them, telling him to get down, to lower his weapon.”

Part of your brain expects him to blow them all away, huh? Like we’re about to be in a fight scene that counts them down.

And that interrupts the feeling of total overwhelm that Sara_Holmes is trying to build here. So keep that in mind as a trick if you’re ever dealing with the uber-powerful. It remains true with even the moderately competent. With helpless characters, you can just be trapped against one dude with a gun and that can be quite overwhelming enough. But once you start dealing with people who could conceivably take on fourteen armed people, you’re better off leaving it up to our imaginations.

Now we promised you a second interesting thing – and it’s our favorite so we left it til last.

Here it is:

This is a paragraph designed to be dramatic. It’s not trying to be subtle, and yet there’s very little classical exposition here.

We’re not told that there is a helicopter light pinning them down while soldiers shout at them. We’re not told about the helicopter at all, except in how its thudding reverberates through his chest – it’s up to us to imagine how close it must be.

So we get a barrage of extreme sensory experiences and just enough information to build a picture of what’s going on and the impression she’s trying to build: how overwhelming this moment is.

That lack of information forces your reader to stop and imagine, which means they get to experience this moment for themselves.

That’s beautifully done action narration.

Here’s how to make it work for you:

  • * Pick dramatic adjectives that fit the tone you’re looking for
  • * Pick strong verbs that indicate force, speed, and intensity.
  • * Use a continuous verb tense if you want to build a simultaneous “stack” of actions or feelings – to build an impression of brain overload and overwhelm for example.
  • * Give a few brush strokes of what’s happening, based in a character’s experience of it rather than the full truth of what’s going on, to force the reader to imagine the scene and experience it for themselves
  • * Don’t name the number of opponents if you don’t want to give your superhero the chance to succeed.

Happy Writing!

NOT OUR DIVISION! What is it? Where Did it Come From?

Thanks to his faith in Sherlock and his “silver fox” looks, quintessential good cop Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade, played by Rupert Graves, is a fan-favorite character in BBC Sherlock. Though some fans argue that he is criminally underused, Lestrade did get what has become one of the most iconic lines in the entire show: “Not our division”. This line, simple yet expressive, exploded into a popular meme that then transcended the boundaries of fandom and crossed over into the mainstream.

The mainstream? You read that right. Let’s dive into this one.

Where did Not Our Division! come from?

This line came from what is widely considered one of the best episodes of the series, Season 2, episode 3, “The Reichenbach Fall.” As part of a criminal trifecta, James Moriarty, Sherlock’s arch-nemesis, breaks into the case at the Tower of London where the Crown Jewels are kept. Sergeant Sally Donovan rushes to Lestrade’s office to report the crime:

SALLY: “Sir, there’s been a break-in”

LESTRADE: “Not our division.”

SALLY: “You’ll want it.”

The image of Lestrade with his feet up, casually munching a donut, was an immediate hit. First, it added a touch of levity to what turned out to be an intense episode. Second, it gently pokes fun at the stereotype of the donut-eating, do-nothing cop, but since Lestrade is a beloved character, there’s an innocence about it that fans found instantly appealing. Thanks to the way the scene is framed, we know that Moriarty is up to no good. We know that Lestrade, Sherlock, and John are about to be entangled in it. So we know that this moment of peace for Lestrade, kicked back with a snack in his office, is the calm before the storm. Plus who hasn’t been tempted at some point to pass the buck or say “that’s not my problem?” Fans were able to relate to this endearing moment, and that contributed to its success as a meme.

How did the meme take off?

Immediately after the episode aired .gifs and still shots of the Lestrade scene started making the rounds on the Internet. As with many popular memes, the text “NOT OUR DIVISION” or sometimes “NOT MY DIVISION” was frequently superimposed over the image. Before long the meme veered off into two different directions.

First, Sherlock fans started using “NOT MY DIVISION” as a response to things they didn’t like or couldn’t relate to, like you’ll find with posts like this gif by a-sherlocked-girl on tumblr, saying “That moment when someone asks for ya to help him with anything related to boyfriends/girlfriends…#not my division”.

In reverse, you can show interest or admiration for something by saying it IS your division like with this charming Valentine’s Day card saying: “You are…my division”.

The second major direction that the meme took was translating “NOT OUR DIVISION” into other languages with intentionally terrible photo manipulation of the Lestrade image to include stereotypical cultural items like a sombrero and churros with Spanish text “NO ES MI DIVISION” or a beret and baguette with French text “PAS NOTRE DIVISION.” Tumblr user fanartist-glaucopis is credited with starting this trend, but since this page is now inactive, Tumblr user shaddicted has compiled as many of the “Lestrade Worldwide” meme variations as possible and put them in one post . Which one is your favorite? Personally, w can’t help but love Italian Lestrade with his giant mustache and plate of pasta.

Is there more? Of course there’s more. And of course, because it’s tumblr, that means sex jokes. Bbcsherlockpickuplines picked up this meme and ran with it. See that compilation here.

Is there fan art? This is the Sherlock fandom, of course there is! DeviantArt user EGLemming created a faithful representation of the scene in comic-form here . Tumblr user littletinatodd perfectly captured the “not my problem” sentiment of the meme complete with flying paperwork in this drawing .

This moment is so well-known in the fandom that some fans have even done cosplay photo shoots of it.

Is Not My Division! in fanfiction?

Fanfic writers find Lestrade’s iconic line irresistible to use in their stories. Author Dragonhaven42 fits it in perfectly in the story “BBC Sherlock Holmes vs. The Cat”:

“John!” Sherlock shouted before remembering he had left hours ago. Groaning he leaned over and snatched up his phone. He dialed Lestrade and waited impatiently until the DI picked up. “Lestrade, I need to get rid of a cat.”

“Not my division,” click.

Damn him.

In her funny Sherlock-inspired take on “The Twelve Days of Christmas” called “The Twelve Days of Sherlock BBC,” author Chrysanthemum247 makes “Not our division!” the refrain for the sixth day of Christmas.

Where else can I find this meme?

T-shirts, stickers, posters, you name it- this meme is so well-known even outside fandom that many popular sites have been selling merchandise with Lestrade’s famous catchphrase. For example, you can show your love for this meme with a fun coffee-and-donut decorated t-shirt.

You can decorate your stuff with cheerful Lestrade stickers complete with and rainbows.

You can even decorate your place with a sleek “Not My Division” poster with a dark red Scotland Yard badge front and center.

There’s even a pillow!

So how’d this meme turn into a mainstream catchphrase?

Even though it originated in fandom, it became a popular hashtag on forums like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Tumblr. It’s succinct, expressive, and super-relatable, so before long, the saying struck a chord with the general public. It became a commonly used expression, entirely disconnected from its original Sherlock source. Today it even has its own pages on Urban Dictionary and Definithing!

There you have it – the next time all you want to do is throw your hands in the air and eat a donut instead of dealing with a problem, you know what to say.  It’s even perfect for dealing with pesky math homework, if you’re so inclined (but we still wouldn’t recommend those pickup lines…).

Got Milk, Sherlock?

What is OmegaVerse?

Got Milk, Sherlock? BBC Sherlock Meme Investigation!

There’s a recurrent theme in the depiction of John and Sherlock’s home life, whether in fanfics, gifs, or fan art: milk. Specifically, Sherlock Holmes never buys milk, 221B is always out of milk, and John Watson always notices they need more milk. So what’s with the milk?

This is a meme that not only got referenced in the show, it was the show’s first meta reference! We’ll explain that in a bit – first we’ve gotta dive deep into this meme to find its origins.

What is it with milk?

As early as the second episode of Sherlock, “The Blind Banker,” we see John begrudgingly shouldering the lion’s share of the shopping. In the beginning of that episode John’s card is declined when trying to buy groceries. When he returns to 221B, he takes a little of his frustration out on Sherlock:

SHERLOCK: You took your time.
JOHN: Yeah, I didn’t get the shopping.
SHERLOCK: What? Why not?
JOHN: Because I had a row, in the shop, with a chip-and-pin machine.
SHERLOCK: You … you had a row with a machine?
JOHN: Sort of. It sat there and I shouted abuse. Have you got cash?
SHERLOCK: Take my card.
JOHN: You could always go yourself, you know. You’ve been sitting there all morning. You’ve not even moved since I left.

As viewers, we know that Sherlock was actually very busy fighting off an exotic attacker while John was gone, something he curiously never seems to share with John. The show winkingly implies that Sherlock often feigns laziness or indifference when it comes to household chores so that he can secretly work on cases, leaving the mundane shopping and cleaning instead to John (or Mrs. Hudson).

The show does such a great job illustrating John and Sherlock’s lopsided domestic arrangement that we implicitly understand John’s shock when he and Sherlock have this conversation in “The Great Game,” the first season finale:

JOHN: I won’t be in for tea. I’m going to Sarah’s. There’s still some of that risotto left in the fridge.
SHERLOCK: Mmm!
JOHN: Uh, milk. We need milk.
SHERLOCK: I’ll get some.
JOHN: Really?!
SHERLOCK: Really.

Of course, again, we as viewers are in on the joke that Sherlock agrees to do the shopping to get John out of the flat so he can play a dangerous game with Moriarty. It’s another time Sherlock chooses not to share his plans with John and deflects further inquiries by talking about the shopping but all in all, it’s a small moment.

So when did Sherlock and Milk become a meme?

Well, essentially right away. This is a character detail and in-joke that dates back to the very beginning of the BBC Sherlock Fandom.

Don’t believe us? Irisbleufic published her fic titled “Only Human” on August 6 2010 – not two weeks after the first episode aired – and here’s a quote from it:

“And what do you do with the milk, anyway? I’ve never seen you put it in your tea.”

“Well spotted,” said Sherlock, in a tone that suggested John was beginning to try his patience. “That’s because I don’t. If you must know, I’ve been running some experiments that require it as a neutralizer.”

Only Human by irisbleufic

The milk dispute stuck with people – probably because it was one of the first details we got about John and Sherlock’s curious home life.

Did BBC reference milk outside of Sherlock?

Oh, yes. This milk gag was actually the show’s very first meta reference.

Here’s the deal:

Way back when the show first began airing, the BBC maintained some official websites that were mentioned in the show including Sherlock’s own website, The Science of Deduction, and John Watson’s blog where he wrote up his summaries of Sherlock’s cases. This extra content was ignored by the majority of fans – which is perhaps why they’re no longer being maintained – but it made for a great place for the show creators to throw in some fan service and meta references without affecting the show.

Dedicated fans who checked the websites and read the comment threads were treated to some hilarious bonus banter between John and Sherlock, which included snarky comments about…you guessed it, more milk!

From the forum posts on Sherlock’s website, The Science of Deduction:

sherlock milk 1From the comments on John Watson’s blog entry about A Study in Pink: john watson sherlock milk

These BBC-written comment exchanges – can we call them epistolary fanfics? – are an official part of the BBC Sherlock canon, and make the fan-service milk joke the Sherlock fandom’s very first meta reference!

The blog even implies that Sherlock DOES actually do the shopping occasionally as a way of apologizing to John for some offense or another: sherlock milk 2

From meta reference to meme

Fans loved the milk gag and quickly started making dairy-themed jokes of their own. In this humorous photo series by Cumberbatch Holmes, John asks “How many Sherlocks does it take to get the milk?” and when Sherlock responds that he doesn’t know, adds “Me neither, ’cause you’ve never fucking done it.”

Tumblr user shockingblankets imagined that Sherlock would let John know about the whole not actually-being-dead thing at the beginning of Season 3 by showing up at 221B with some milk:

In her beloved fanart Now You Will Never Have to Leave Jawn Artist @sherlockwillneverdie on tumblr imagined that Sherlock could solve the milk problem by obtaining a pet cow:

There are well-known fan accounts like @ContactSH on Twitter, who shared the following important update in January 2017:

sherlock milk 3Where’s the Sherlock milk meme headed now?

It looks like this is a meme that’s here to stay. It’s developed into more of a character detail and relationship quirk than in joke, and can be found throughout the Sherlock fandom, from crackfics to stunning fan comics. It adds a nice touch to character studies and quieter stories that focus on the day-to-day life at 221B.

In “Fortunately the Milk,” which is inspired by Neil Gaiman’s story of the same name, author khorazir kicks the story off with this exchange:

“Why is there no milk?” he asked the universe in general. “I bought four pints just yesterday.”

The recipient part of the universe was currently residing in his own armchair typing on his phone. He made a grumbling noise.

John grabbed the empty container, shut the fridge and turned in the direction of the grumble. “What did you do with the milk? Poured it down the drain just to annoy me? Or is there another mould experiment lurking somewhere in the flat I should be aware of?”

Fortunately the Milk by khorazir

Johnlock fans will frequently find milk jokes in their fics thanks to its potential to create some “domestic disputes.” In “The One Time Sherlock Went to Get the Milk,” author Casual-Laurie creates some drama imagining what might happen if Sherlock left a dangerous experiment running while he went to fetch the milk after a fight with John:

“I tell you what. I am sick and tired of going shopping three times a day because you couldn’t be bothered to go and get your own stuff. I tell you what. You want milk? You can get off your arse and go and get your own bloody milk.”

“The One Time Sherlock Went to Get the Milk” Casual-Laurie

Regardless of the reason for its popularity, the few scraps of Sherlock dialogue about milk stuck with fans and sparked a meme that still persists today. This is one of the few memes that started as canon, got taken into fandom and then back into Sherlock canon material and certainly one of the oldest Sherlock in-jokes out there.

Now that you’ve got the lowdown on the milk situation at 221B, stay tuned for more lactose-free posts:

What is Omegaverse? Fanfiction Term Explanation! [Alpha/Beta/Omega]

What the hell is the “Omega’verse?”

So, if you’re really lucky, you’ve already heard something about the Omega’verse. If not, well, you should still count yourself lucky—we’re about to explain it to you. After all, it’s a big enough Alternate Universe that it’s getting attention from University academics. We’ll get to that – but there’s something we’ve got to get out the way first.

The Omega’verse is explicitly and intrinsically sexual. The kinky kind of sexual. There is no “vanilla” version of it, and while we love it, we’re totally sympathetic to those of you that would rather avoid subjects like these. So, if you’re not big on kink, then now’s a good time to find another page on our site to browse! Sometimes we write about otters!

Still here? Good. Let’s get to business…

The Omega’verse is a kink-based AU built upon an animalistic hierarchical system in which males can become pregnant (hereafter referred to as mpreg). In omega’verse or A/B/O fics, everyone is born with a particular disposition; “alpha,” “beta,” or “omega.” The qualities of these three classifications change according to how any one fan writes their story, but there are a few generalities shared by most takes on the ‘verse which fall in line with what you’d expect from their names: “Alphas” are dominant and capable of impregnating “Omegas”,“Omegas,” by contrast, are submissive and can become pregnant, and “Betas,” generally, are essentially normal human beings. In some fan works, either “Betas” or “Omegas” may be omitted and substituted by the other.

That’s not all, of course. We wouldn’t need a content disclaimer for that. Don’t worry folks, as promised this ‘verse gets kinky fast.

Where Did The Omegaverse Start?

Well, like most good things, it started in the Supernatural fandom. And, lucky for us, it can be traced back to a specific prompt from an anonymous Livejournal post on May 2010:

“AU – Their world is just like ours…except…in their world there are two types of men. One is the alpha male, the other is the bitch male. Alpha males are like any ordinary guy with the exception of their cocks, they work just like dog cocks (the knot, tons of cum etc) The bitch male, is just an ordinary guy without the special cock.

I’d like to see Alpha male Jared, and Bitch male Jensen. Jensen is a snotty prude (think Lady from lady and the tramp) he may be a bitch male but he’s not just going to let anybody take a go at his sweet little ass…until he meets Jared…then prudey little Jensen turns cock slut for Jared. Bonus points for J2 being OTP, Jensen was a virgin before Jared, and now that they met each other, it’s for life.

Completely up to you if mating happens just anywhere like in the middle of the sidewalk, in a park etc or on a more private level.”

Honestly, if that doesn’t get you excited, we don’t know what will. We should probably mention that this is the same prompt that’s responsible for the popularity of knotting in the Supernatural fandom so, you know—double up your thanks.

After that, in November 2010 and January 2011, a similar prompt popped up in two different anonomous prompts, now developed into this:

“There are three types of men, alpha males, beta males, and omega males. Alpha males are like any ordinary guy with the exception of their cocks, they work just like canines (the knot, tons of cum, strong breeders, etc) The beta male, is an ordinary guy without the special cock. Omega males are capable of child bearing and often called bitch males.”

And it’s this prompt that solidified the main characteristics of the Omega’verse. The prompt’s first fill was the fic I ain’t no lady, but you’d be the tramp by cfamiliaris posted on July 24 2010. That title sparked the “Tramp’verse”, destined to evolve into our current Omega’verse. From the looks of it and according to most of the fanon postings we’ve seen, the Omega’verse started with this meme and fill, born out of the Supernatural fandom. What was surprising was just how philosophical this AU was destined to become. We’ll get to that in a sec. First, let’s answer the most er…pressing question:

How close to bestiality does Omega’verse get?

Depending on the author, pretty darn close. Other animal traits included range from the knotting of Alpha’s penises (yep, like a dog’s) to the need for Omegas or Alphas to go into heat to induce a male pregnancy, to self-lubrication, to all-in-one orifices (cloacas, like a bird’s). The knotting is particularly popular in the Supernatural fandom. The variety of interpretations and overall uniqueness of the Omega’verse makes for a fun AU to play around with, especially when pairing up characters like Sherlock and Watson or Jared and Jensen that have mismatched power dynamics.

Check out this fic: I ain’t no lady but you’d be the tramp

What happened to Omega’verse?

It got big.

Really big.

This is where that university article we mentioned earlier comes in. There was an entire essay dedicated to the omega’verse phenomenon the 2013 academic book “Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking over the World,” by the University of Utah professor Anne Jamison.  This is a woman with a PhD in Comparative Literature from Princeton, who’s been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Review of Books, writing about self-lubricating anuses. There’s so much to love about the fanfiction world, we really can’t encompass it.

But, are omega’fics really that popular in the grand scheme of things?

Yes and no. Some point out (rightfully so) that Omega’verse fanfictions only comprise about 1% of all fanfiction you’ll find on the net. But, remember that there is a lot of fanfiction on the net, so even having a number not preceded by a decimal is a big deal.

Plus, if you’re a fan of Supernatural, Hannibal, or Sherlock, those numbers start jumping up hard—to 6%, 4%, and 2.1%, respectively, according to DestinationToast’s Tumblr.

This keeps getting cooler! How’s Omega’verse doing now?

From that original, simple outline, the Omega’verse has split into a wide variety of different forms. As mentioned, some omit the Betas or Omegas, while knotting is popular throughout. Mpreg also remains a staple and animalistic qualities like heats, cloacas, growling and biting may be added in. Enough so that some takes can border on Furry Fic which is a whole different can of tails.

The nature of the relationships has developed as well. Originally, Alpha-Omega pairings were steeped in BDSM tropes but otherwise typical (if often hyper-jealous) relationships. Nowadays, “paired” Omegas and Alphas can often form semi-magical bonds that transmit emotions and often kill a bond-mate if their partner dies. Sometimes these bonds are fully telepathic, sometimes they’re combined with soul-mate tropes and predestined, sometimes they can be formed with a single bite to the neck.

But what’s really interesting is what this ‘verse became when Alpha-Omega traits were applied to a whole Alternate Universe and society.

Originally most Omega’verse fanfiction was straight-up porn. Really fun porn, but still, mostly porn. Suddenly, omega’fics began to ask: What happens when you start making men come in two forms: stronger and dominant and weaker and submissive? Writers began to use the Omega’verse as an allegory to explore social justice, power dynamics, and human rights. Many of these fics touch on the experience of real-life societal issues like women’s and men’s rights, alternate gender identities, and the societal expectations of gender norms.

Where’s is Omega’verse going?

Well, that’s hard to say. This is a ‘verse that has outright exploded in the seven years it’s been around. Only seven years and it has wound up getting the full academic treatment. It’s hard to say exactly where it’s going, but we can offer a few ideas.

For starters, due to its current fanbase and the emphasis on Mpreg, the Omega’verse is largely going to be dominated by the M/M crowd. As it stands, according to tumblr’s resident statistician DestinationToast, 90% of fiction tagged with A/B/O is M/M. And, due to the sexual nature of the Omega’verse, you can expect more than half to remain sexually explicit. Likewise, with its distinctly BDSM-ish flavor and the ever-increasing social acceptance of kink lifestyles, it’s likely to become more popular.

However, the most interesting thing to look out for will be how it is used to explore larger social issues. The fanfiction community is, in general, open to using fiction to explore concepts and topics shunned in traditional publication. The mpreg and sexual hierarchy aspects of the Omega’verse are absolutely ripe for exploring and discussing gender roles, stereotypes, discrimination, oppression, and power dynamics.

There are very few AU’s with both the potential for meaningful social dialogue and the popularity that the Omega’verse has. And the fact that it’s getting attention from academia indicates that the Omega’verse is bringing fanfiction a few steps closer to mainstream acceptance.

And who doesn’t want that?

Anyway, there’s a lot to be done with the Omega’verse and a lot that already has been done. And the best way to get started is to jump in with both feet. We guarantee this is one AU that will always surprise you.

Anderson and Dinosaurs Meme – [NSFW] Sherlock BBC Memes!

So, who else hates Philip Anderson from BBC’s Sherlock?

Yeah, us too. Now, let’s be fair: Anderson is designed to be a minor antagonist and an unlikeable jerk. Judging by the amount of hate he receives from fans, the writers do a good job of making him fit that mold. In fact, we think they do too good a job of it. Anderson is a bit one-dimensional in the first two seasons of Sherlock, and that one-dimension is a sneering punching bag.

Which, of course, is part of why we’re in love with the Anderson and Dinosaurs meme.

Now, don’t worry if you haven’t heard of the Anderson/Dinosaur meme—it’s a bit obscure, and we’re about to explain it to you. It’s a short story, but an interesting one, with intriguing implications about how fans respond to characters—good or bad—in the franchises they love. But, be forewarned:

This starts out sexual and a bit kinky and only gets safe for work at the end. While we love writing about this kind of stuff, we know that some of you would rather avoid it.

So, are you really sure you want to know what dinosaurs have to do with our obnoxious neighborhood Anderson?

Yes?

Good. Because this is a fun one.

Let’s get right to the point:

This all started with a Fandom Prompt.

Ever perused the SherlockBBC-fic forum? If not, give it a go. It’s a fun place to browse and meet other fans of fanfiction. In fact, the forum has multiple threads dedicated to fic-prompting memes where anyone can post (anonymously or otherwise) a suggestion for a Sherlock fic. What could be better than that?

Well how about a prompt that sparks its own meme?

See, this is where the Anderson/Dinosaur meme got started: On August 11th of 2010 (at precisely 2:55pm UTC, if you want to get really exact), an anonymous poster on the SherlockBBC-fic forum came up with a prompt. And it was both super simple and exquisitely bizarre:

“When Anderson masturbates he thinks of dinosaurs

yes, that’s a prompt”

Did we really need to include a mere eleven words in an indented quote box when we could have linked it to you? We think so.  As a matter of fact, let’s repeat that:

“When Anderson masturbates, he thinks of dinosaurs.”

We know what you’re thinking and, before you say it, let’s just quote the first response to the prompt:

“You are a genius”

Before we get onto the prompt’s first fill, let us take a moment to recommend you give that whole thread a read. This article took us too long to finish because we spent too much time laughing at the comment thread. Apparently, people start arguing about what kind of dinosaurs Anderson would be into.

Whoever wrote the first fill obviously had their own ideas about that.

The Anderson & Dinosaur Prompt’s Hilarious First Fill

It took four days for the prompt to get its first fill. We’d love to give credit for the piece, but the poster filled it anonymously, so we are left ignorant of this brave genius’ identity.

The fill is just a single scene, written (mostly) from Sally Donovan’s perspective. It opens with her outlining some of the weirder sexual partners she’s had, then shifts to the fun part… where she’s in Anderson’s basement, in a room filled with dinosaur paraphernalia.

Oh, and she’s wearing silk lingerie with a T-rex pattern. We should probably mention that. Obviously, she has some… concerns about this particular kink, and decides to opt-out. That isn’t the end of the story nor the punchline. Now, we could tell you the punchline, but…

That would spoil the fun.

After all, the story is a mere 421 words (less than half the length of this article) with the title included. It’s short, sweet, to the point and oh-so-damn-funny, so we strongly suggest that you give it a read yourselves. You can find it here.

A Strange Meme with a Strange Popularity Pattern

We research a lot of memes around here. Usually, they follow one of three patterns—a quick death, a slow build, or a sudden explosion.

For some reason, the Anderson/Dinosaurs meme did none of the three—it was unheard of one minute then the next you’d find yourself stumbling across it as though it had always been there. You’ll find pictures (both adorable and sexy), fanfics, and simple mentions of it cropping up every month. But it didn’t have the sort of explosion that, say, “I Believe in Sherlock” did ; It was like someone simply flipped a switch.

On top of that, seven years later, the meme is still around. You can still find new pictures of Anderson cuddling with dinosaurs or doing… other things with dinosaurs. That said, artistic renditions of the idea have gradually transitioned to more innocent takes on the idea.

On that note, there’s one more interesting thing to note about this meme’s spread: while it started in the fanfic community, it really latched onto fan artists. In fact, half the time we spent researching this topic was spent just sifting through fan-art and trying to get to the history of the meme. There was so much of it, it almost became overwhelming.

Why did Anderson Having a Dinosaur Fetish Become so Popular?

Everyone hates Anderson. He’s designed to be hated. He’s petty, spiteful, and has enough clout to cause a problem for poor Sherlock.

The idea of him having a sexual obsession with dinosaurs undercuts that completely. It makes him seem less threatening, a little weird, almost childish. I mean, how are we supposed to take this arrogant sod seriously when we know he gets stiff watching The Land Before Time? When we have that image in our heads, it undercuts his mindlessly hostile attitude.

Depending on the artist’s take on the word ‘fetish’, dinosaurs give him a deep secret that he doesn’t want anyone to know or a childish obsession that makes him seem vulnerable. Either way, the dinosaurs meme takes a hated Mary Sue and turns him into a multidimensional character we want to explore.

We figure that the disarming innocence this meme can invoke is part of the reason the Anderson/Dinosaur fanart has shifted to more cutesy pictures than the original NSFW options. We want there to be more to Anderson than what meets the eye and we want his petty aggression to be tempered by something adorable.

Was Anderson & Dinosaurs Referenced Anywhere?

Unsurprisingly, no. Due to the overtly sexual subject matter, this meme hasn’t made it into any official Sherlock media.

So, where is the Anderson/Dinosaur meme going now?

Honestly, that’s hard to say. It didn’t really follow the spread patterns of most memes we’ve seen in the first place. It’s not omnipresent by any means but it’s not invisible either. You can often find subtle references to it in Sherlock fanfiction that, otherwise, doesn’t even mention the character. And even a brief search in AOOO will show something interesting: “Anderson Dinosaurs” yields about 40 results… ranging from 2010 to July of 2017. So, while it’s not huge, it refuses to die.

Who knows? Maybe its endurance has something to do with the sporadic release cycle of the Sherlock TV series or how his characterization has been rebooted in the later Sherlock seasons, giving us reasons to want to reexplore Anderson and rediscover his dinosaurs. Either way, while you aren’t going to be seeing it everywhere, the “Anderson and Dinosaurs” meme is not going away anytime soon.

So, do yourself a favor: track down some good fanart and keep an eye out for a mention of dinosaurs next time you’re reading a fic.

What is Dragonlock? – BBC Sherlock Fanfiction Culture History [Updated 2018]

Here there be Dragons

This week, we’ve got more than a meme for you. This is a meme that spanned two fandoms, got referenced on Sherlock, and grew into a universe. This week we’re taking on Dragonlock.

Haven’t heard of it? Have you ever seen anything like this embroidered Smaug by iggystarpup on DeviantArt?

This Smaug sports a Sherlock scarf and his instantly-recognizable catchphrase of “Bored”, on a background reminiscent of 221B’s wallpaper. There’s no doubt this adorable Smaug fanart is a Sherlock reference.

And it’s not alone. It’s not even close to alone. Dragons have done more than just cameo in our beloved Sherlock fanworks. They’re so prevalent in fanart and fanfiction that the Sherlock fandom has developed a whole dragon-based world of rules, trends, and terms to revel in – a fully fleshed out alternate universe of its own. We’ll dive into those trends and terms in a minute – but first:

Sherlock is a character-focused crime drama set in modern-day London that shuns the supernatural.

So how did a Sherlock Holmes become a dragon?

The foundation for Dragonlock emerged when the news broke in 2010 that Martin Freeman (John Watson) would be starring as Bilbo Baggins in the highly-anticipated film adaptations of Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Both Tolkien and Sherlock fans alike cheered the casting and Sherlock/hobbit crossover jokes started popping up.

That’s not the end of the story, though.

In May 2011, after winning a BAFTA award for Sherlock, Martin let it slip backstage that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) had been cast as Smaug, the menacing dragon and star villain of The Hobbit. This set off a fandom frenzy for Dragonlock, fanned by the sheer crossover potential of the casting choices. Here yet again was Martin playing a small-but-brave everyman who gets in a bit over his head; here yet again was Benedict playing an intriguing, almost otherworldly character known for both stunning power and overconfidence. The Dragonlock posts practically wrote themselves.

So did the double casting ever affect BBC’s Sherlock?

Oh, yeah.

Here’s the deal:

At one point Martin revealed that he initially had to turn down the role of Bilbo due to a conflict with Sherlock season 2 filming, but Peter Jackson (Director of The Hobbit), himself a big Sherlock fan, worked out a special production schedule so that Martin could fulfill both commitments.

How does that affect Sherlock? Well, it led to a few tight scheduling moments. Some eagle-eyed fans noticed Martin’s legs looked a little different in a scene in “The Reichenbach Fall” – he had to shave them in order to wear his prosthetic hobbit feet!

Since Benedict did motion capture and voice acting for his role as Smaug (and as the Necromancer, incidentally), he and Martin did not film their scenes together. However, Peter Jackson did share a picture of Benedict visiting the set with Martin in costume on his Facebook page in 2013 – a post that earned him more than 45,000 likes. (no longer available on Jackson’s Facebook page)

Why does that matter to Sherlock?

Updates like this during filming and the furor over each of the three movies as they were released between 2012 – 2014 stoked the fires of popularity for Dragonlock, and the meme truly began to grow. And grow. And develop a whole world and fanon rule set of its own, until it was an alternate universe of its own.

Was Dragonlock referenced in Sherlock?

Many fans think that the exchange in the season 3 finale “His Last Vow” between Sherlock and Mycroft about Magnussen outside the Holmes family home at Christmas references Dragonlock:

MYCROFT: He never causes too much damage to anyone important. He’s far too intelligent for that. He’s a business-man, that’s all, and occasionally useful to us. A necessary evil; not a dragon for you to slay.

SHERLOCK: A dragonslayer – is that what you think of me?

MYCROFT: No. It’s what you think of yourself.

Okay, so this one dragon reference could just be a coincidence. But then, later in the same conversation, Mycroft drops the d-word again when discussing MI6’s proposal for Sherlock to take on some dangerous work in Eastern Europe:

SHERLOCK: Then why don’t you want me to take it?
MYCROFT: It’s tempting… But, on balance, you have more utility closer to home.
SHERLOCK: Utility!
How do I have utility?
MYCROFT: Here be dragons.

So there you have it, the origins of what was to become a massively popular alternate universe that spanned two fandoms. Want to know the full scoop – the background to any modern Dragonlock?

Let’s dig in!

The World of Dragonlock

You can break up most of the Dragonlock AUs into three main concepts:

1 ) Sherlock is Actually Smaug

These are the most common types of Dragonlock works since most of the Dragonlock AUs were inspired by the casting of The Hobbit. Fans found that Smaug’s ultra-dramatic lines often worked very well coming out of Sherlock’s mouth.

And, of course, fanartists and fanficcers ran with that, mixing the show’s transcripts. This one by Tumblr user coolcollarpops is one of our favorites, pairing an image of Smaug saying “I am fire, I am DEATH’ with John telling Sherlock off for being a drama queen.

In this cute comic-style drawing by DeviantArtist Allison-beriyani, a scarf-wearing Smaug wallows in his gold and complains about being a “high-functioning sociopath” while a tiny John-as-Bilbo reminds him that actually he’s a “bloody dragon.”

Not all fics and fanarts listed ‘Smauglock’ are like this, however. The term came to apply to the next type of dragonlock as well:

2 ) Sherlock is an actual dragon, but not Smaug

Direct crossovers make the most obvious references, but many artists, writers and readers wanted to branch out from the character of Smaug, to play with Sherlock Holmes in dragon-form. This connected and resonated well with a trend already popular in the Sherlock fandom to turn Sherlock and John into otters, sharks, hedgehogs and more. It was only a matter of time for fanartists to bring dragons into the mix.

You can spot these Sherlock-dragons by looking out for Sherlock’s trademark blue scarf as in this incredibly detailed drawing by DeviantArt user monokromerain:

Check out The Dragon’s Soldier by twistedthicket1 for a multi-chapter, incredibly detailed WIP about an alternate universe where human mutants can “shift” into a dragon state and John, a soldier in The Queen’s Army, chooses Sherlock, a deadly Northern dragon, to be his battlefield partner.

3 ) Sherlock is a humanoid dragon

In these, Sherlock is still mostly human with some reptilian features. Ah, it wasn’t until this trend became common that we (personally) started calling this a fully established AU. There’s some crossover here with fics that imagine Sherlock, with his near-supernatural powers of deduction, may be some kind of demon or fallen angel who hides fangs, wings, or a tail under his sharp suits and dressing gowns.

Either way, the same trends and rules apply.

What trends and rules?

There are a ton of tropes to engage in as a Dragonlock writer to subtly reference other fics’ beloved universes or bring old dragon lore to fanfiction. Some of these tropes and preferences caught hold, developing into a general consensus on what to expect in the Dragonlock AU universe.

So here’s the deal:

1) They’re western-style dragons

By which we mean scales, wings, and often, fire-breathing. That makes sense, given Smaug as the meme’s forefather.

Not always, of course: Dragon Blood by VincentMeoblinn gives Sherlock the ability to transform into a pale green eastern-style dragon: twelve feet long, resting partly on its belly, mustached, with four horns and elongated canines.

2) Dragon!Sherlock has a not-fully-human appearance even in ‘human’ form.

These fics often play with the beloved Shifter trope which gives characters an animal identity that they can shapeshift into and share physical and mental traits with. So in many fics humanoid-dragon-Sherlock can shapeshift into the form of a full dragon! But, in almost all of them, when Sherlock is in ‘human’ form, he’s not fully human looking.

This usually entails cat-like eyes and often a tail, small horns, or sharp teeth. Benedict’s features work well with some draconic touches.

Of Scales and Flesh by PinkGloom gives Sherlock a humanoid dragon appearance including catlike eyes, horns, and red scales.

This beautiful tumblr post by skywolf25 gives Sherlock dragon eyes and some subtle sharp fangs.

3) There are other dragons and a system for them in society.

Dragons are often either persecuted by or hidden from the human world. This includes a ton of different tropes, but they’re usually established in each fic for itself and there isn’t much general consensus.

Sometimes dragons have custodians, as in recreational’s fanfiction Volatilis,  or Captains, as in O, Captain My Captain by Gothams Only Wolf.

Sometimes dragons are second-class citizens or slaves, as in Twisted Thicket’s  The Dragon’s Soldier. Sometimes, alternatively, they’re royalty and treated as such, like in VincentMeoblinn’s Dragon Blood. But in almost every fanfiction, you’ll find out what the societal system is.

3) Dragons have certain superpowers

This isn’t always true, of course, but it’s definitely a well-accepted trope that can be added to a fanfic without any explanation needed. Common superpowers are telepathy, truth-seeing, camouflage/invisibility and/or hypnotism.

All of these tendencies have a host of exceptions as fanfiction writers and fanartists explore and expand the edges of the Dragonlock AU’s possibilities, experimenting with unusual dragons, physical traits, social structures, and superpowers. Want to explore more on your own?

Where can I find Dragonlock?

Sites like Fanfiction.net and Archive of our Own have an abundance of Dragonlock fanfictions. Archive of our Own even has a Dragon Sherlock section. To increase your chances of finding Smaug-specific fic, try using the #smauglock or #johnbo hashtags in addition to #dragonlock or #dragonsherlock. If you’re looking for artwork, there’s an abundance of beautiful Dragonlock pieces on Deviantart.

So that is Dragonlock: the casting choice that became a meme that became a universe.
