With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, we’ve been busy with everything from buying planners and setting goals for next year to party planning and trying to nail the perfect costume.
This year, we’re thinking a Harry Potter theme is the perfect way to ring in the new year. Since we’re going to Hogwarts in our minds, we’re going to Hogwarts with our get-ups as well.
We’ve been to themed New Years Eve parties before, and even a few with costumes, it’s something we wish we saw a little more of.
Why not ring in the new year dressed to the nines? If a tux or sparkly dress isn’t your style, why not go Disney Princess or Hogwarts student or even a superhero? Starting the new year off with a mission to save the world? We’re here for it!
While we aren’t witches or warlocks with magical powers and that Hogwarts letter we wanted so much never came, we’re going to embrace our inner magic side with costumes!
Here come the big questions…what house should we belong to? Should we be good or evil? Should we go all out or play on something more obscure?
No matter what, it seems like any Harry Potter costume is a winner.
So here are our 8 picks for classic Harry Potter costumes to dress up in this year.
Hagrid is a loveable, dependable, and fan favorite Harry Potter character.
He also presents fans with the perfect DIY costume!
You can pull his look off with a flannel and brown pants, an oversized coat with a belt wrapped around your waist and big teased hair! Don’t forget facial hair, if growing it isn’t an option – store bought works perfectly.
Grab a watering can or a lantern for an accessory and just be the kindest version of yourself all evening. There’s no better way to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new than with a smile.
Luna Lovegood is the perfect Harry Potter character to channel, not just on New Year’s Eve, but always.
She’s quirky, she’s unique, she walks to the beat of her own drum, and more important – she embraces who she is and she does it with a smile.
She also does it with her own sense of style. So if you’re looking to be a wizard this Halloween, but one that’s a little less traditional, we recommend becoming Luna for the evening.
Oh, and don’t forget those awesome glasses!
Everyone’s favorite Harry Potter ‘bad guy’ is a perfect costume for any event, really. We love him, we hate him…we hate to love him and he is a major power player in the Harry Potter realm.
Taking on the role of Draco will allow you to be a bit more snarky than usual, which is a sentiment we can all enjoy from time to time.
It also allows you to look totally fierce in greens and golds. Seriously, there’s something about the color combo that brings Draco’s sense of badassery to life in a totally stunning way.
Something Harry Potter costume ideas have in common is that once you pick your character, you can craft a unique costume from any point during their timeline.
For Ron, you could wear anything from the knitted R sweater his mother made him to his Gryffindor house robe. You’ll need his wand, the classic style red wig (or at least, some hair color if a wig isn’t your style) and the undying loyalty to Harry that’s a huge part of his persona.
Ron is strong of his own accord, too, so don’t forget to wear that confidence we wish we’d seen more of from him in the beginning.
Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be excited to see Dumbledore walk into their NYE event? We know we’d love it.
If you want to take on the role of Dumbledore this year, there are a few must-haves.
You, of course, need his wig and a long beard. You wouldn’t be Dumbledore without them. Next, a dressing gown under a robe will be a necessary addition. You’ll need his wand, his half-moon glasses, and a hat!
You can also include makeup to age your face, but aside from his look, be sure to channel his spirit. He’s not just one of the best characters from Harry Potter – but from pop culture as a whole.
A true icon, Professor McGonagall is as kind as she is wise, but you don’t want to get on her bad side.
For her look, you’ll need her signature hat and cape, wand and glasses, and something simple and black to wear under the cape.
Her cape is green, velvet, and stunning – so it might not be totally easy to find this late in the game, but it’s worth a shot. It truly helps to set her look apart.
If there’s a Dumbledore at the event, stick close to him, and make sure to keep watch over all the other guests.
Hermione is smart, confident (albeit a little bit of a know it all), and fierce. She works hard, studies often, and focuses on what the heart of a person looks like.
If you want to dress up as Hermione this year, the attitude is what’ll set you apart. Hermione is simple – she’d rather be working on spells and taking in Hogwarts than spending time primping in the mirror.
You can get a robe, a wand, and a time turner and you’ll be set! Just make sure you’re ready to share your wisdom with party guests as often as possible.
Didn’t think we’d leave Potter himself off the list, now did you? Harry Potter is sure to be an instant classic. Haven’t we all wanted to dress up as The Boy Who Lived?
You can draw the lightning bolt on your forehead, find those totally cool circular glasses, and from there – pick your garb. You can be Harry playing Quidditch, Harry in his sweater vest, Harry after Hogwarts…the list goes on and on.
There are, of course, other great Harry Potter costumes to take on this year. In fact, there are too many to name in one place.
The one thing they all have in common is that they’ll bring that special sense of magic to any event you attend.
Which character from Harry Potter are you dressing up as this Halloween? Let us know.
