When the Harry Potter books – and then films – came out, readers around the world expected to find magic. We expected to find stories of witches and warlocks and good vs evil. We even expected to find tales that we could relate to, stories of the normal stresses of young adults, even if their world was sprinkled with magic.
What we weren’t initially expecting (but became obvious very quickly) was the way we found so much inspiration to embrace ourselves.
There’s a lot of wisdom in Harry Potter, and we’ve touched a bit on that here so far. You can find a passage or a quote for almost any emotion you’re feeling – either to help make sense of it or help turn it around.
Today, we’re focusing on some Harry Potter quotes that make it easy for us to embrace who we are.
This is a quote we’ve reflected upon more times than we can count. It can be frightening to embrace who you are, especially if who you are is different than the majority. It can hinder us from shining our own unique light and that’s actually quite a shame.
Working through that fear is liberating, and coming out the other side is a reason for celebration. If we were all exactly the same, it’d be a pretty boring world to exist in. We need the brave ones, the unique ones, the strong ones – we need that fresh perspective.
This is pretty self-explanatory but important nonetheless. Part of embracing yourself comes from not allowing others to get you down. Of course, it’s hard not to consider the opinions of others, and it can be hard to ignore the negative ones, but it’s necessary if you want to truly be happy.
It sort of ties back to our first quote, also. It takes a certain amount of bravery to embrace yourself, but it’s definitely a bravery worth working towards.
This quote is meaningful for anyone who feels like their circumstances might be getting the best of them. We may not be skilled or talented in areas that we think matter most, but what we do with what we have is where the importance lies.
You could be the most talented individual in the world, but without the heart to make the right choices, none of that really matters at all.
So embrace who you are, in strengths and weaknesses and make sure the decisions you make are for the best – not just for yourself, but for the good of the world.
Small steps are the start to great adventures.
We said this was one about believing in yourself and embracing who you are – so this was a “must-include”. As far as we’re concerned, it’s one of the most important lessons life has to offer.
You don’t want to get to the end of your life and realize you’ve spent all your time trying to be something. You don’t want to get to the middle of your life and see only the work you still have to do to achieve your goals.
We’ve only got one life to live and without believing in who we are, we’d all be missing a very important piece of the puzzle.
Plus, with confidence comes a renewed sense of capability.
This was one of our favorite moments in the Harry Potter series, said by one of our favorite characters. We’ve all been given the advice, from someone who loves us, to be who we are and to be unashamed.
Usually, we smile and agree and we think they’re “supposed” to say that. You know… the whole ‘our parents and grandparents are going to think we’re awesome even if we aren’t’ thing.
What we should do, instead of questioning it, is to run with it instead. If we have someone who loves us and believes in us, we’ve got a lot.
You know that saying about loving yourself before you love someone else? The jury is still out on how we feel about that one. What we do know is that we are all human, and no matter what differences we have, we’re all deserving of love and life.
You may not feel like the strongest, smartest, or most important person every day. In all honesty, you may have more days than not where you feel like everyone has something you don’t, !75 you should never forget that you are valuable.
Sometimes, whether we like it or not, we find ourselves in a situation that requires us to take a deep look at who we are. Those times aren’t usually full of sunshine and rainbows. In fact, they’re often times of trial and struggle.
After we experience times of struggle, we need a period to recover. We need time to find ourselves again. This quote reminds us that it’s okay to find a place where we can accept what goes on around us (even the bad things) and move towards a future that doesn’t hurt.
We have to give an honorable mention to this quote by J.K. Rowling herself, it may not be from Harry Potter specifically, but it’s from the powerhouse that wrote it. In a Harvard speech, Rowling reminds us all that what we need is the ability to believe.
We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” — J.K. Rowling
It’s easy to get lost in the stress and drama and confusion that life can bring and sometimes we can lose ourselves too. That’s why it’s so important to find books and films like Harry Potter that not only inspire us to believe in magic and healing, but to believe in ourselves, too.
