We’ve said it before, and we know we’ll say it again, but the Harry Potter realm is an emotional one. From the magic and the mystery to the joy and the sadness – you can’t read the books or watch the films without finding a connection with them on an emotional level.
Some of those stories are easy to read, they play on your best and most positive emotions. Other fanfiction stories really test you as you dig in. You see the worst in some of your favorite characters and those you disliked…they get more twisted.
Some of them are just downright heartbreaking. They deal with the loss of love, of loved ones, or of themselves.
At times, we find ourselves wanting to get lost in those tales of hope and magic and the good guy winning. There are also times where we want to read the latter.
So here are 6 moving Harry Potter fanfiction stories that we’ve definitely saved to our list of must-reads – again and again.
This one packs a big punch into a short story. We weren’t expecting to feel as emotional while reading it as we did, but by the end, we were full on crying.
When Denis first finds Collin’s camera, he leaves it be – the author saying he’s still too young and the pain is too fresh. When he approaches the camera years later, however, he holds it in his hands and it’s like a piece of his brother is with him again.
This one-shot is as beautiful as it is haunting. Maybe it’s because you can almost feel the pain that Denis must feel, every single time he takes a photo. Maybe it’s because the story describes something so personal, which is something that lacks the most important person.
Maybe it’s because we can see ourselves in the story, like Denis, finding something left behind by a loved one and wondering what it means to us after they’re gone.
Wondering if it can truly mean anything without them.
If the author’s description alone isn’t enough to make this one a must-read for you, the reviews of the work will be.
Stages of Hope takes you on a ride and it’s not all an emotional rollercoaster. You’ll find laughter and humor, adventure and accomplishment, trials and triumphs, and joy in this story.
You’ll also find darkness and loss and despair – it’s truly a story that has it all.
Stages of Hope allows the characters we know and love to stay true to themselves while taking on new aspects of their personas. We see them as they were to J.K Rowling and as they are to the author of this story.
When it comes to Harry Potter fanfic, that’s the kind that sticks with us the most. When we see that familiar thread stitched with something else to make it new, but still comfortable.
You’ll laugh and cry, scream and do that thing where you cover your face with you hands becuase you just don’t know what else to do as you read this fanfic, and you’ll do it all over and over again.
This series of one-shots (again, by Lady Altair) will bring you into an emotional place before you realize you’re in one.
You see grief, felt by various characters in the Harry Potter realm, but you see it in a very unique way. It’s zeroed in, on specific moments in the larger picture of pain. They’re trying to escape or trying to make it go away. They’re trying to be strong or trying to find their place.
You can imagine the moments before and the moments after. You can draw your own conclusions or you can stop where the author ends. These little snippets, little glimpses into these stories, allow you to see how pain is handled by those who experience it and by those who are near but without the direct tie.
If it’s not been obvious so far, we don’t (and can’t) totally hate Severus Snape. He’s not been a man who did right by many, but he wasn’t heartless, either.
In this fanfic, the author allows readers to see Snape interact with something he truly loves, something very important: music.
His talent brought him out of a lonely existence, and while he never flourished as a ‘people person’, he did form bonds over playing the piano with people who left quite an impact on him.
Tragedy strikes, and he simply stops. The music dies when she does.
It’s years later when he’s sat in front of a piano again, and we’ll let you see where it all goes from there.
Fair warning: get some tissues.
This fic focuses on Remus and Luna, two of our favorite Harry Potter characters. Their bond in The Dark Side Of The Moon is unique, but the more you read of this story, the more you can see it playing out in front of you.
It’s the writer who, like many of the fics we rec, stays true to the characters while giving them enough of their own spark in the stories we read.
This one is less of a total emotional rollercoaster and has more of an underlying bittersweet feel to it instead. That being said, it’s still going to tug at your heartstrings.
It’s easy to see why these stories keep readers coming back for more. We know the heartwrenching stories we’ll unravel, we know the pain and the hurt, we even recognize the moments of joy (albeit, fleeting in most), yet we bookmark these fanfics and find ourselves indulging in them from time to time.
It’s a testament to the writers, the characters, and the realm Rowling built. The characters we’ve been on this journey with are so well written and so easy to love that we keep wanting more of them and their stories. We want to go on more adventures with them, the good and the bad.
