Tis the season to be jolly…fa la la la la…wait, that’s not quite right, is it? While the holiday season has certainly kicked off, our favorite holiday comes just a bit before we prepare for Santa Claus.
This is Halloween, this is Halloween! Pumpkins scream in the dead of night.
That’s more like it.
Now, while we’ve got you in the Halloween spirit, we wanted to write up a blog post that focused a little more on the ‘evil’ of Harry Potter.
Let’s be honest, we all may root for the underdog or the good guy, but we need a larger than life villain. Now, we’re not saying this is one of those circumstances where we’re secretly rooting for them…no, we’ll save that for another day. What we are saying is, that they’re the (un)necessary evil of the Harry Potter realm.
These are the villains that are downright awful. The ones who make your skin crawl. The ones who make you so angry you could cry a little.
So without further ado, here is our spooky shoutout to Harry Potter’s scariest.
He needs no explanation, in fact, most won’t say his name. Instead, calling him He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named which makes his existence even more sinister.
Born on December 31st, 1926, Voldemort is the most powerful Dark Lord. With skills in dark magic, including the ability to possess living creatures, Voldemort is almost untouchable.
It’s not a fact he tries to hide.
While there was plenty of evil at Hogwarts, none had quite the depth and depravity of Voldemort’s.
Bellatrix’s unwavering devotion to Voldemort was at the heart of her evil. That devotion may not have been the root of it, but it was certainly the soul of it.
Born in 1951, Bellatrix is a skilled duelist but even more frightening, she’s an experienced Occlumens. There’s nothing more frightening than someone who can completely keep you from their every feeling, thought, and emotion.
Especially when they’re as evil as Bellatrix’s.
Oh, and talk about a villain that sticks…we’ll never get over hearing that baby voice.
Villainous quote: ‘You need to mean them Potter! You need to really want to cause pain — to enjoy it — righteous anger won’t hurt me for long — I’ll show you how it is done, shall I?‘
He betrayed Harry’s parents.
Need we say more? No, but we will.
Born in 1959/1960, Pettigrew was a wizard and once had humanity within him. That all changed, however, not just when he betrayed Lily and James, but when he faked his own death and blamed the betrayal on Snape.
He was truly spineless in his quest for self-preservation. If you’re willing to sell out those closest to you and throw anyone in the path of destruction to keep yourself from it…you’ve certainly made it on our villain list.
Villainous quote: ‘Bone of the father, unknowingly given, you will renew your son. Flesh of the servant, willingly sacrificed, you will revive your master. Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken, you will resurrect your foe.’
A pureblood, Death Eater, and prefect at Hogwarts, Lucius Malfoy was an ice king. Everything about him made you feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. He used that to his advantage.
Born in 1954, he was rich and very much upper-class, so much so that he looked down on anyone beneath him. His only true kryptonite was the love he had for his family (even if he did use Draco selfishly…the love was still there).
It wasn’t, however, enough to be his saving grace.
He was terrible to Dobby, and anyone who can be terrible to Dobby is just…plain…terrible. He tortured muggles (and anyone…really) for his own entertainment, and he cared not about the heart or soul of others.
Villainous quote: Did you actually believe, or are you truly naïve enough to think that children stood a chance against us?
As a professor, inquisitor, and headmistress at Hogwarts, this woman couldn’t have been more poorly suited for the job.
Born on the 26th of August, year unknown, Dolores is brutal at her core.
For starters, she hated children. Well, that’s sort of the gist of it all, isn’t it? She was despicable, torturous, and awful to everyone she came into contact with – especially the kids. She was hated, loathed even, and she loved it.
Villainous quote: ‘You know, I really hate children.‘
Honorable mention to the Death Eaters
In general, the Death Eaters were a level of evil that brought pain, destruction, and of course – death to Hogwarts and every fan of J.K Rowling. We can’t forget, nor can we forgive them, for all of that.
If you’ve not yet rewatched all the Harry Potter films this October, there’s still time. While the novels, and the films, were never outlandish – there’s still something about them that makes us think of this time of year.
Perhaps it’s because it welcomes witchcraft and wizardry, much like we do all the time.
Who is your favorite Harry Potter villain? Let us know.
